James Holzhauer, a professional sports gambler and Jeopardy winner for 32 consecutive games, ended his winning streak on Monday, June 3, 2019.
Holzhauer, aka ‘Jeopardy James’, lost to user-experience librarian named Emma Boettcher and thus failed to break the record of Ken Jennings’ regular-play winnings and number of games won.
Ken Jennings won USD 2,520,700 in 75 episodes (with 74 wins) in 2004; while James Holzhauer won USD 2,464,216 in 33 appearances from April to June 2019. Holzhauer needed only USD 56,484 to overtake Ken Jennings, but was stopped short by Boettcher.
Though James Holzhauer failed to break the record of Ken Jennings, his amazing 32-game winning streak established several “Jeopardy!” records including the following:
- Biggest ‘Jeopardy!’ winners by season (2018-2019 or Season 35)
- Biggest Jeopardy! single-game winners on ‘Jeopardy!’ by season (2018-2019 or Season 35)
- Biggest ‘Jeopardy!’ regular play winnings leader for 5 days (USD 298,687)
- Biggest single-game winners on ‘Jeopardy!’ (USD 131,127)
- Largest successful Daily Double wager on ‘Jeopardy!’ (USD 25,000)
- Largest successful Final Jeopardy! wager on Jeopardy! (USD 60,013)

In his last ‘Jeopardy!’ game, James Holzhauer bet only USD 1,399 in the Final Jeopardy round, an unusually small amount for a gamer who became known for his big bets. Jeopardy host Alex Trebek described it as “modest”. Compare that to Emma Boettcher’s, whose USD 20,201 bet propelled her to finish the game with USD 46,801 winnings.
Holzhauer explained to The Action Network, “I knew I could only win if Emma missed Final Jeopardy, as there was no way she wouldn’t bet to cover my all-in bet.”
But all three contestants gave the correct answer in the Final Jeopardy round.
So James Holzhauer bet just enough to not be overtaken by the third placer.
James ended with a total of USD 24,799 while Boettcher got a total of USD 46,801. Immediately after Boettcher’s winnings was revealed, James Holzhauer walked over to high five the new ‘Jeopardy!’ winner, Emma Boettcher.

Will this be James Holzhauer’s last appearance on Jeopardy!? Judging from the show’s history, James Holzhauer will likely appear in non-regular Jeopardy! games, just like past winners of the game show.
Fans are looking forward to a one-on-one match between Ken Jennings and James Holzhauer. And probably a game featuring ‘Jeopardy James’ with Bradford Gates Rutter, the highest earning contestant on Jeopardy! (USD 4.788 million).
