The film tells the story of Scarlett O’Hara (Vivien Leigh), the strong-willed daughter of a Georgia plantation owner (Thomas Mitchell). It follows Scarlett’s romantic pursuit of Ashley Wilkes, who is married to his cousin, Melanie Hamilton and her subsequent marriage to Rhett Butler (Clark Gable).
Set in the American South against the backdrop of the American Civil War and the Reconstruction era, “Gone With The Wind” is considered as one of the greatest films of all time. It is in the top ten of the American Film Institute’s list of top 100 American films.
It received 10 awards during the 12th Academy Awards including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Actress (Vivien Leigh), and Best Supporting Actress (Hattie McDaniel).
“Gone with the Wind” is also a huge box office success, and is still the most successful film in box office history when its earnings are adjusted for monetary inflation. The film earned USD 402.35 million worldwide, but adjusted for inflation in 2014 by Guinness World Records, that amount balloons to USD 3.44 billion. Adjusted for 2017, the figure goes up to USD 3.7 billion worldwide.
