Dallas Buyers Club is a 2013 biographical drama film, co-written by Craig Borten and Melisa Wallack, and directed by Jean-Marc Vallée.
The film tells the story of Ron Woodroof (Matthew McConaughey), an AIDS patient diagnosed in the mid 1980s when HIV/AIDS treatments were under-researched and the disease was not understood and highly stigmatized. Woodroof smuggled unapproved pharmaceutical drugs into Texas for treating his symptoms, and distributed them to AIDS patients by establishing the “Dallas Buyers Club” while facing opposition from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
“Dallas Buyers Club” was critically acclaimed and was a mild commercial success, grossing over $27 million domestically and $27.9 million internationally, against a budget of $5 million. Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto, received the Academy Award for Best Actor and for Best Supporting Actor, respectively, at the 86th Academy Awards for their outstanding performances in the film. The movie also won the award for Best Makeup and Hairstyling, and got nominations for Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Editing.
