After 4 weeks of showing, Avengers:Endgame’s box office still lags behind the all time worldwide box office leader , “Avatar”.
Avengers: Endgame worldwide box office stands at USD 2.626 billion as of May 23, 2019, compared to the Avatar record of USD 2.788 billion. That means the epic MCU megahit needs more than USD 162 million to ease “Avatar” off the top spot.
Though analysts expected “Avengers: Endgame” earnings to easily surpass “Avatar” at the start, some analysts are now saying it’s too close to call.
Avengers Endgame’s box office had dropped more than expected, and the MCU epic faces an uphill climb as competitors like “Detective Pikachu”, “John Wick: Chapter 3” and Aladdin slow it down.
And it will become more crowded in the next few weeks as “Godzilla: King of Monsters”, “X-Men: Dark Phoenix”, “Men in Black:International”, and “Toy Story 4” start showing in cinemas.
At the rate it’s going, “Avengers: Endgame” may have the chance of overtaking “Avatar” by early September, and not by mid-June, says chief analyst Shawn Robbins of BoxOffice Media in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.
In terms of the list of highest grossing films adjusted for inflation, “Avengers: Endgame” is nowhere near “Avatar” which is at Number 2, with USD 3.273 billion. The top spot still belongs to the 1939 epic historical romance “Gone With The Wind” which earned $3.728 billion worldwide. Avengers: Endgame is currently at Number 5, behind Titanic (USD 3.099 billion) and “Star Wars” (USD 3.061 billion).
The MCU megahit “Avengers: Endgame” is directed by Anthony and Joe Russo and stars Robert Downey, Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Don Cheadle, Paul Rudd, Brie Larson, Karen Gillan, Danai Gurira, Bradley Cooper, and Josh Brolin.
