Team John Legend’s Lisa Ramey (age 33) from New York and Betsy Ade (age 40) from Wisconsin perform “The Joke” by singer-songwriter Brandi Carlile during The Voice Battles Season 16 (2019).
Both Ramey and Ade gave outstanding performances, and didn’t fail to impress the audience and the judges, who all gave them a standing ovation and glowing comments as well.
After saying that Blake and Adam were “cop-out kings” for not helping him decide which one to choose between Lisa and Betsy, Team Coach John Legend chose Lisa Ramey as the winner of the battle. He said both Betsy and Lisa lit up the stage but Lisa impressed him “a hair more.” John thinks Lisa’s going to be really a formidable competitor on the show.
Meanwhile, Kelly Clarkson didn’t let the chance pass and pressed her button to steal Betsy Ade as soon as host Carson Daly reminded the coaches that Ade was available for the steal. Judges are allowed two steals each and Kelly used her last steal on Betsy. She used her first steal on Matthew Johnson, also from Team Legend, in an earlier battle.
The Voice 2019 airs Mondays and Tuesdays 8/7c on NBC.

Judges Comments:
Adam Levine
I was so into the both of you. To even conceive of making this decision is that much harder because it’s just completely different. However, you do share similarities, and they were very much highlighted in this one. Just the emotion of it.
I love the song, I love the power, I love how you both did two completely different things that came together beautifully for this moment that was powerful and raw and emotional and awesome. And good on you. Both of you. Amazing job.
Blake Shelton
That moment couldn’t have been more magical. I mean, if I was being stupid and critical I would say, you know, Lisa, in the verses, had the edge and when the song opened. I mean, she’s got the range, she’s got the kind of voice that can attack that part of the song.
But then Betsy, the power and the amount of herself that she pours in to her singing is undeniable. So I don’t know how you really – you know, good luck, John.
Kelly Clarkson
Everything you two just exuded was so powerful – vocally, emotionally, but it was more than that. It was literally a blessing to watch both of you just be so comfortable. I literally was like, “It’s even.” The entire time, I was like, ” Either one is just incredibly insane.”
There was, though, for me, and it was the tear in the voice. Betsy, you did this note over here. You were squatting down a bit. And I was like, “Well, you haven’t gone that high yet.” And then you went big like that – and I was like, “Ohhh.” That is the slight difference for me. I think you’re both so great.
John Legend
First of all, I would like to thank the gentlemen for not helping me at all in my decision. Kelly, at least, gave me a little leaning.
I came into today worried about this decision because I know both of you deserve to be on the show. They just showed me they belong on a big stage, and they’re not afraid of the stage. They embrace it and I love that about both of you. I love your energy together, and I hate to break up this happy duo.
I’m gonna pick the person that just electrified me just a little bit more with the fire in her voice. The winner of this battle is Lisa.
