“When researchers discover and exploit a fossil of the Mythical Pokémon Mew, they unleash a creation that goes against the very laws of nature. The Legendary Pokémon Mewtwo was intended for use as a tool of destruction. But as Mewtwo becomes aware of its own dubious origin, it begins to resent its human creators and seeks revenge…” – Netflix
It is the third movie to be in a different reality instead of the actual timeline. It was released on July 12, 2019 in Japan and takes place in the I Choose You timeline. It is the first and (so far) only CGI-animated Pokémon movie.
The film was shown at the Anime Expo 2019 at the Los Angeles Convention Center and is scheduled for a worldwide premiere on Netflix on Pokémon Day on February 27, 2020.

Pokémon: Mewtwo Strikes Back—Evolution is the 22nd installment in the Pokémon film series and a CGI remake of the first film. It was released in Japan by Toho in July 2019 and on DVD and Blu-ray in Japan on December 18, 2019. The film was animated at OLM’s CGI unit.
The film was announced on December 14, 2018. Despite Japanese actor and voice actor Unshō Ishizuka’s death on August 13, 2018, the staff confirmed that his narration work was featured in the movie.
On January 21, 2020, The Pokemon Company International announced that the movie would be released worldwide (except for Japan and Korea) as a Netflix Original Movie on February 27, 2020. It is reportedly the first Pokemon movie to premiere on a streaming platform rather than theaters or on TV.
Pokémon is a media franchise created by video game designer Satoshi Tajiri that centers on fictional creatures called Pokémon. There have been 23 animated films (with one reportedly in development for July 2020) and one live-action film. The first 19 animated films are based on the anime TV series Pokémon, and the other four are set in an alternate continuity to the anime. The films are produced by the animation studios OLM and Wit Studio and distributed in Japan by Toho, with various studios distributing the films in North America. They were directed by Kunihiko Yuyama and Tetsuo Yajima.
The first Pokémon animated film, Pokémon: The First Movie, was released in Japan in 1998. A live-action film, Pokémon Detective Pikachu (May 2019), was produced by American studio Legendary Entertainment, directed by Rob Letterman, and written by Letterman and Nicole Perlman. It is distributed in Japan by Toho, and outside of Japan and China by Warner Bros.
