This German drama film is inspired by the life of Gerhard Richter, a German visual artist. It follows the story of art student Kurt Barnert in post-war East Germany who falls in love with fellow student Ellie Seeband.
But Ellie’s father, Professor Carl Seeband, does not approve of their relationship. The story becomes complicated when Carl’s role in the Nazi eugenics program is revealed.
Richter reportedly sees the film as grossly distorting his biography. Despite that, “Never Look Away” was selected as the German entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 91st Academy Awards and made it as a nominee in the said category in January 2019.
